Did you know…

In 1889 King Umberto and his Royal Consort, Queen Margherita, while taking a walk along the streets of Naples, looked with curiosity at a lot of people eating a strange ‘loaf’ of a thin round sort of bread. Having got a zest for tasting it, they ordered the baker, Raffaele Esposito, to prepare three pieces of this funny ‘bread’. The baker put the colours of the Italian flag on this pizza: Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil, as a token of homage to the sovereigns. This is the origin of the ‘Pizza Margherita’.
